Carlsbad Loses a Friend

The Carlsbad Marathon shares in the loss of a dear friend. Paul J. Applegate, age 62 passed away on Sunday, August 10 after a courageous five year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig Disease). Paul was an ambassador for the ALS Greater San Diego Chapter and was always willing to support and promote the "On A Roll For A Cure." He successfully completed three Carlsbad Marathons in the 'chair' he affectionately learned to navigate with the assistance of endless numbers of volunteers. In 2007, his body stiff from hours in a wheelchair, Paul Applegate still managed to rise and walk the final steps of the Carlsbad Marathon. "It was exhilarating," Paul said about his race, a feeling that the crowd felt too. Paul's finish had the fans on their feet cheering and crying when he rose from his chair to make the final step of the marathon and cross the finish line. Prior to his ALS diagnosis in July 2004, Paul Applegate stayed active running 10Ks and playing tennis. Within months of his diagnosis, Paul was forced to quit his job as a financial management executive in the health care industry. Paul never let his diagnosis stop him and in spite of his prognosis, he was quoted as saying "My greatest challenge is to keep a positive mental attitude. Take the hand that's been dealt, so to speak." Paul will be missed dearly but not forgotten. Learn more about ALS and how you can be a part of their "On A Roll For A Cure" at this year's marathon.

Half Marathon Triple Crown Series

Congratulations to the 2008 Half Marathon Triple Crown Finishers! The 2009 Triple Crown series begins January 25 in Carlsbad - set a goal and register today for either the Carlsbad full or half marathon. Then, plan to enjoy 39.3 miles of running paradise with three of the country's best and most scenic half marathons.

The Half Marathon Triple Crown series kick offs each year with the Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon. The series then continues with the La Jolla Half in April and the America's Finest City Half Marathon in August. All events sell out, so register early!!!Complete all three and in addition to a huge sense of accomplishment, you'll earn a gorgeous Triple Crown medal at the America's Finest City Half Marathon finish line. You don't need to do anything other than register and finish all three in the same calendar year and you're in the series -- it is that simple!
